Gothic - Bookcases
We adapted another bookcase we had made in the past to fit in with the William Morris 'Artisan'
range of furniture. This range is in between Gothic Reformed and Arts & Crafts style. The bookcase
designs are shown in a range of typical early Morris furniture colours to later style where
wood came more to the fore. The Artisan range was noted for it's pared down look, relying on
simple striking shapes and massing with interesting Medieval inspired colours. We've just
continued this tradition with these bookcase designs. The bookcases don't need to be 3 bays,
we've shown a single and double version of these. They could be 4-6 bays or more wide if
preferred, but this would involve some site assenbly & installation. And although shown as
freestanding bookcases they can be built-in - we've shown a single bay bookcase built-in to
a niche below. . They could also have bottom cupboards with doors, and we are working on these
designs at the moment. In fact we are working on some designs that are modular and allow
bookcases of any number of bays wide, corner versions, with doorways in, etc. The bookcases
are made bespoke to order, so we can adapt the dimensions to your requirement, and change the
colour or finish. We don't do quotations until we've agreed a spec with a client.

The above photos show the progress of a new bookcase being made. The bookcase is made,
then primed and then painted with 2 tops coats, rubbing the first coat down for a smooth
final coat. The shelves and back are painted seperately and assembled after finishing, as
this is the best way to get a good finish inside the bays. Special attention should be paid
to access the room in the house with such a large bookcase, as these are bulky & very heavy
requires 3 men to lift it).

The above 2 not very clear photos show a pair of triple bay bookcases in the workshop. They
give you an idea of how this design can have more bays added to it, to make a library. They
also show the middle fixed shelves, the other shelves are sitting in a pile in the corner.
