This is a range of furniture we have been producing for several years, based on the work of the early Dutch Modernist movement, De Stijl. Whilst two of the members of the group, Gerrit Rietveld and Piet Mondrian, have become famous through time, the movement as a whole was very influential in the design world, and continues to exert an influence today ( witness IKEA or the Dyson vacuum cleaner colours ). Their work still looks fresh and original.
Rietveld is now regarded as one of the most influential designers of the C20th. His Red Blue chair and 'Schroeder' house (above) are probably THE design classics of the century. Rietveld produced an enormous body of work, but it was his early work that really formed the inspiration for this growing collection.
As Rietveld himself did, we are able to produce most pieces to special sizes, and they can be coloured to your own preference. Rietveld trained as a furniture maker, and his best work still retains an element of the craft about it. This, and the great use of colour, was probably what appealed about it and prompted us to include it in our work.
We are also building up a collection of work that compliments our own De Stijl pieces, so that we can offer you an unrivalled selection on the web.
Please read the short essay on the origins of De Stijl, where the ideas & inspiration came from. See the index page or Click here.
