This less well known room interior was among Mackintosh's last works, and is contemporary with his work at Derngate. For the room walls he created a series of dark oak frames around the room; the wide vertical panels being linked by the horizontal bands of the picture rail and baseboards. But to stop the room looking too dark the walls between the frames were painted in a light buff colour. A typical Mack feature was used in the room to link the dark wood frames to built-in furniture around the fireplace end of the room. What really lifts the room is the stencilled patterns around the edges of the buff coloured panels. Both the pattern and colour used are eye catching, part Mayan, part Jazz age, part computer graphics. This was done by a man still at the top of his game. At the bottom we've shown a variation of this treatment where the stained wood framing has gone and just the stencilled panels remain, albeit in more strking colours. This look would not cost a fortune to reproduce if you liked it.
