Mackintosh designed this washstand (shown below) for the Blue bedroom in Hous'hill, for Kate Cranston, one of Mackintosh's best patrons. With its wonderful shape and abstract panel of glass & tile, the washstand shows Mack at the height of his creative powers. This started out as doing a CAD drawing prior to making a reproduction of this original washstand in oak. But once that was done it just kept progressing into designing variations and new uses, much as Mack himself did with his own work. The overall shape is quite straight forward, but the sloped side panels give it a striking profile. Another wonderful touch is the cantilevered drawers sections, with the recessed handles picked out in colour. Although the piece was designed as a washstand it lends itself very well to use as a bookcase, or bureau bookcase.

With books in front of the tiled/glass back design would block out the design, so we used a matching woodback panel. Or we could use a generic small square blue tile backing to suggest the original design & colour. Or we could replicate the original as much as possible. Likewise the worktop was kept as wood, rather than tiled, as this is kinder to books and easier to use as a desk. This cabinet can be finished as the original one, or we could finish it in a range of typical Mack colours/finishes as shown below. We don't discuss sizes or pricing until we've agreed a spec with a customer.

Mackintosh furniture came in many different finishes, depending on the effect he wanted in a given interior or depending on the customer's preference. Above we've shown several 'typical' Mackintosh finishes you could have, from oak in various finishes, to a green stained oak to painted & lacquered finishes. Great designer that he was Mack would adapt elements of his designs as required.
