CR Mackintosh - display bookcases
This is called having fun with Mackintosh's style. The idea for this new display shelf unit / bookcase came
from some of Mack's freestanding dressing mirrors, they were some of his most interesting and striking pieces,
definately in the 'spook school' era of his design work. We design and make new pieces using Mackintosh's ideas
as inspiration, he would have respected that more than just straight copying his work. The inspiration for these
bookcases came from a less well known stand he designed for Pettigrew & Stephens, for the Glasgow International
Exhibition 1901.
We shown several designs below that can be used for bookcases and display shelf units. The pieces were all
viewed as being freestanding rather then built-in, so that you see the curved side profiles. The top was
extended in height with applied carved & painted decorative pieces, so typical of Mack at this period. The
bookcases could be painted white, dramatic black or another colour (we've shown a green, as Mack stained
some furniture green in his early days) or a wood finish. The extended top could be left open or enclosed.
For use as a display unit you might prefer to omit the back, so the wall is visible behind it. We also could
supply add-on side shelf units to create a 3 bay unit, which can look good with the sides set back; see
designs below. Bespoke made to order. We don't discuss sizes or pricing until we've agreed a spec. with a
customer.

The bookcase above left has an open top shelf, which emphasises the verticals more. The right hand
bookcase has a middle vertical divider, which has the effect of creating squares with the shelves, a
typical Mack idea. The triple bookcases below can have further detailing added, as the bookcase at the
bottom; which has 2 mouldings added to the top of the side sections with square cut-outs in it. The
black bookcase below was designed to a customer's requirement for a narrower taller bookcase, to show
how we can adapt these to suit your needs.
