CFA Voysey; Display cabinet

This display cabinet was based on a Voysey bureau design, which was a much taller more substantial piece of furniture. We just took the base section of the original design and adapted it for the display cabinet, which will be used for displaying family memorabilia. What really makes the piece are the end 'faces', formed with the 2 eyes and heart. Voysey, and Mackintosh even, used faces in their designs quite a bit to add interest and i guess a touch of humour. The rails feature the typical voysey curved pattern. The Gothic ogee shaped bottom of the sides is typical of Voysey's later interest in and use of Gothic elements. Normal table height. Shown here in a light-medium oak finish, but could quite easily be stained darker, waxed or lacquered, or painted, as shown below.

Re the top 2 designs. We've shown 2 options for the faces in the end panels. The LH face is a bit smaller and dropped down so the eyes are beneath the display compartment. The RH version the face is a bit bigger, as Voysey designed it, but it means the 'eyes' are actually looking into the compartment. You can choose which you prefer.

The basis for this design was Voysey's original design for a bureau, which was a much taller heavier piece of furniture. The original design had 2 lower rails (as the design above right), to brace the piece better. However, as this piece is much smaller 1 lower rail would probably be fine, and visually makes the piece look lighter.

Above left, is a plan of the interior to show the customer that the main things they wanted would display easily. Above right, we also designed a side table, in light oak, using the same design source, which is shown in the tables section.

Colour variations;

Voysey furniture doesn't always need to be in oak. He quite often used painted furniture as well. The above 2 designs show the same display cabinet painted either white or green (typical Voysey painted colours). The cabinet is nearly finished, as shown in the workshop photos below.
