This lamp base is attempt to re-create the Skyscraper style in small scale. The stepped base is pure Deco, with the tall stem echoing a skyscraper. It's about getting the details right - carry the Deco theme through to even the table lamps and make it look special. Add the right shades and these look great. While stepped Skyscraper style lamps were produced at the time, most were in ceramic or glass. This one is available in painted or wood finishes. Size ht 45 or 30cm. Bespoke Made to order. Re the above lamp the customer is going to raise the shade so the lamp base can be seen better.

These can be made in a range of woods and painted finishes, as shown below. To be honest these lamps are a labour of love to make, requiring probably too much hand labour; All the pieces have to be made individually, then finished and then assembled very carefully to avoid marking or damaging them - see this progress from start to completion below). They can of course be made in just a single colour or wood finish, which would make them easier top produce. These 2 lamps were fitted with Bakelite lampholders and black twisted fabric cover cables for an authentic period look.

The lamps are supplied with a lampholder - state if you want a bayonet or screwed type bulb holder & estimated wattage of the lamp). There is so much choice when it comes to lamp fittings that it's not funny! For UK & certain other countries you can have bayonet type lamp holders, which come in a large & small size, or increasingly popular are the screw in bulb lamp holders which come in large (E27) or small (E14) sizes. The finishes available for lampholders can range from Bakelite as shown here to polished brass, antique bress, bronze, copper, nickel, chrome, white, etc. Lamps are generally switched on in 1 of 2 ways, either a switch forms part of the lampholder or you have an inline switch (often about 12"/30cm + from the lamp. But not all types of lampholder or finishes have an integrated switch. Cables are another area with a lot of choice. Usually if you have a Bakelite/plastic lampholder then 2 core electric cable is used (which is which is thinner than 3 core cable). If you have a metal lampholder then we need to use 3 core electric cable (which has an earth cable connected to the metal lampholder to prevent the possibility of an electric shock). Then there is a good choice of finish for the electri cables, from the usual plastic cables in black, white & gold to the fabric covered cables available in many colours and some patterns.

The height of the shade above the lamp should be an early consideration. Customers will choose their lamp shade when they receive the lamp. But some shades can be too low and they cover the top of the lamp. We can extend the height of lamps, and as a result their shades, if we know this when making it. We usually supply our lamps with 3M / 9ft of cable, which can be shortened if preferred. If you want a longer cable let us know so we can quote for this. A black cable is supplied as standard, but you can choose white or gold or braided if you prefer - let us know when ordering). We do not supply the plug for several reasons (each country uses different plugs, and fitting a plug subjects us to legal regulations which we prefer to avoid), but they are easy to fit, and generally require a 3A - 5A fuse (depending on the bulb wattage).

It would be an odd designer that didn't tweak their designs over time, and this lamp design is no different. The original was produced years ago, but now looks better for a smaller top 'cap'. The top cap could be omitted if preferred.

The above photos show the progress of a lamp from start to finish. These pair of Aesthetic lamps began life as a rough sawn board from a tree. The board is walnut and requires a visit to 1-2 wood yards to choose the right size of board to do the whole thing, ensure it really dry, check the grain and wood tone, etc. Which takes time. The medium size board is machined down to several different thicknesses for the components. Then all the different pieces are cut to L x Ht x W, which is time consuming with so many pieces. The lamp was dry assembled to see how it looks, and then French polished the black pieces before gluing this up. Once glued up the pieces to be left as a wood finish were stained, some pieces 2-3 times to get an even tone. Then when dry the whole lamp was finished with French polish to a hi-gloss finish. Then the lamp holders and cables were assembled and the lamps complete.
