Arts & Crafts - Strap hinges

New Arts & Crafts Movement copper strap hinges polished

A feature of much Arts & Crafts furniture, doors, etc., is the use of ornate/elongated strap hinges. While the simple butt hinge was sufficient for most jobs, from Morris onwards hinges were made into more of a feature. Generally they are made up for a particular size for a particular job, so by their nature tend to be one-off small batch made.

We usually supply these hinges as part of job, whether it be a new cabinet to a new kitchen. But hand making complete hinges, with the knuckles, is very expensive. A more cost effective solution, that still gives you the look, is to due dummy straps, as these can be cut and finished quite straight forwardly. These copper dummy straps were produced for the oak bookcase below. The owner wanted to make the piece visually much more interesting. The copper straps were applied with a new polished finish, but will soon tone down to look original. They could have been made in brass or steel, and could have different finishes as well. If you are looking for something not shown here we can either design & make it or source it for you. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Copper can be finished in several ways. It looks great with a high polish, as shown above. But this can be too bright for some or if the furniture has been toned down to look older more antique. We can antique the copper down to a dark brown if required.
